Human hair color is a pigmentation of hair follicles and a combination of eumelanin and pheomelanin. Eumelanin is darker and the more it contains, the more it will be darkish and the less it contains, the less will be darker.
And, pheomelanin is reddish color, the more it contains, the more it will be reddish and less will be a little bit reddish. Brown hair is brown due to its very high level of eumelanin and very low level of pheomelanin. There are some other factors responsible for making hair brown.
But now, the question is, where do these eumelanin and pheomelanin come from? Okay! Both of them have come from Melanin.
What is Melanin and how it causes hair brown?
Melanin is a natural pigment which gives your hair and skin its natural color. In human, melanin is found mostly in the skin color, but also in hair, iris of the eye, feathers, and scales. The biggest part of melanin is that, It gives very well natural protection from the harmful sun’s UV rays, but not totally.
As like skin and iris of the eye, Hair color is fully dependent on the types of melanin. Generally, Melanin is of three types,
But in the color of hair, two types of melanin are presents which are eumelanin and pheomelanin.
Eumelanin is the most common melanin in biological terms. It is a black-brown type of pigment found both skin and hair and usually connected to the proteins. Eumelanin is of two types,
- Black Eumelanin
- Brown Eumelanin
These two types of eumelanin are differentiable by the pattern of their polymer bonds. Black eumelanin is darkish and brown eumelanin is much lighter than black.
Pheomelanin is a pink-red type of melanin, also found in both hair and skin. People with lighter-skinned and darker-skinned both contain pheomelanin by born.

Brown hair is brown because of its higher level of dark pigment Eumelanin and lower level of pale pigment Pheomelanin. The more eumelanin the hair have, the more darkish the hair will be. And the more pheomelanin the hair have, the more reddish the hair will be.
Brown hair : 95% eumelanin and 5% pheomelanin
Black hair : 99% eumelanin and 1% pheomelanin
Red hair : 67% eumelanin and 33% pheomelanin
Genetic factor in brown hair :
Hair color is a genetic process and very much complicated. Each person holds two genes in each of their DNA. One gene that controls the darkness and the other controls the redness. You may have got a dominant brown hair gene from your parent and which is why, you have brown hair.
Why Hair turns Brown?
There are tons of people having a problem of sudden brown hair. Their hair suddenly turns black to brown, red to brown or blonde to brown. This type of problem may arise when you have got some problem in your body and daily habits. Only proper hair care and proper maintaining can back to your natural hair color.
High level of Malnutrition
Higher level of malnutrition can cause your hair brown. Make sure enough foods that are good for having a healthy life as well as healthy hair such as lean meat, eggs, milk, green leafy vegetables, salmon fish, beans, nuts and low-fat dairy products.
Radiation has a direct effect on hair. Passing too much time in front of computers, radars and x-rays can make your hair brown. If this happens, then make sure enough vitamin A rich foods and high protein foods. Try these: egg yolk, milk, pigs liver, carrots, seaweed and of course drink green tea.
Copper deficiency is another reason of causing hair brown. If your body lacks of copper, then ensure copper rich foods like liver, potatoes, fruits, celery, tomatoes, etc. Because, copper helps in absorption of Iron which ensures the continuous supply of oxygen to hair follicles. It also helps to improve the natural color of hair which is what we are looking for.
Sun bleaching is also responsible for brown hair specially in summer time. And also people who shifts from cold region to hot region, may get brown hair due to sun bleaching.
Water containing dissolved minerals
The water you use for washing your hair may be a criminal. Because, water has many dissolved minerals which are very harmful for the natural color of your hair. Swimming pools water contain chlorine which is a silent killer and beach area’s salty environment is also harmful for hair.
Products which contain peroxide
Hair products that contain peroxide, may lead to sudden brown hair. Hair color products have a bleaching effect which is very much dangerous than chlorine.
Hot appliances such as hot dryers, hot irons etc. burn hair and make it look like brown. Limiting the uses of hot appliances can save your hair from looking brown.
Excessive use of honey, chamomile and rhubarb
